Heritage Home in Niagara-on-the-Lake? You May Qualify for Up to $7,500 in Restoration Grants
If you own a designated heritage property in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Town may cover up to half the cost of your next restoration project – including cedar roof restoration and exterior wood repairs.
The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Heritage Restoration and Improvement Grant Program provides eligible homeowners with 50% of the cost of approved conservation or restoration work, up to a maximum of $7,500. Applications for 2026 are currently being accepted.

Who qualifies?
The grant is available to owners of properties designated under the Ontario Heritage Act — either individually designated properties (Part IV) or properties located within the Queen-Picton Heritage Conservation District in Old Town (Part V). Residential, commercial, and institutional properties are all eligible.
Importantly, the Old Town Heritage Conservation District was significantly expanded in February 2026, meaning many more properties now fall within the designated area than before. If you weren’t previously eligible, it’s worth checking again.
What work is covered?
The grant covers conservation and restoration projects that protect or enhance the heritage attributes of the property. Exterior work – including roofing, siding, and wood restoration – is typically eligible, though the specific scope is confirmed through a required pre-consultation with the Town’s Heritage Planner before you apply.

What’s the process?
The key first step is booking a pre-consultation meeting with Heritage Staff before submitting your application. This is a requirement, not optional – applications without prior consultation won’t be accepted. You can reach the Heritage Planner at heritage@notl.com.
From there, you’ll need a Heritage Permit for the proposed work (required for any exterior alterations to designated properties), and then a grant application submitted alongside it.
