How Long Does a Cedar Shingle Roof Last in Ontario?

A well-installed cedar shingle roof in Ontario can last anywhere from 30 to 50 years. Some last longer. Some fail in 15. The difference almost always comes down to three things: the grade of cedar used, the quality of installation, and whether the roof gets proper maintenance.

Here’s what you actually need to know.

What affects cedar roof lifespan in Ontario:

Cedar Grade

Not all cedar is the same. There are three main grades:

  • 100% clear straight grain — the best. Resists cupping, cracking, and splitting. This is what a roof meant to last 40+ years should be built with.
  • Select grade — a mix, roughly 80% clear, 20% lower quality cuts. Fine for most applications but will show its age sooner.
  • Common grade — the cheapest option. Prone to early warping and splitting. We don’t recommend it for roofing.

If you’re getting quotes and one comes in significantly cheaper than others, ask what grade of cedar they’re using. It matters more than most homeowners realize.

Installation

Cedar roofing has specific requirements that general roofers often get wrong — nailing patterns, spacing for expansion, proper underlayment, ridge and flashing details. A cedar roof installed incorrectly won’t make it 30 years regardless of the cedar grade. This is why hiring a contractor with genuine cedar experience isn’t just a preference, it’s the single biggest factor in how long your roof lasts.

How maintenance extends lifespan

A cedar roof that gets regular care will consistently outlast one that doesn’t, often by 15–20 years. The key maintenance tasks:

  • Inspection every 1–2 years – catching small issues early (cracked shingles, failing flashing, minor rot) before they become large ones
  • Cleaning – removing debris, moss, and algae that hold moisture against the wood
  • Oil preservative treatment – replenishing the natural oils cedar loses over time, typically every 4–5 years
  • Shingle replacement – replacing damaged or missing shingles as they appear, not waiting until there’s a leak

A roof at 20 years that’s been well maintained is often in better condition than one at 12 years that hasn’t been touched.

Signs your cedar roof is nearing end of life

  • Widespread cupping or curling across multiple sections
  • Shingles that are cracked through, not just surface checks
  • Visible rot that goes beyond isolated shingles
  • Granular loss and thinning across large areas
  • Recurring leaks despite repairs

If you’re seeing one or two of these, a restoration may still be viable. If you’re seeing most of them, it’s likely time to think about replacement – either with new cedar or a synthetic alternative.

Cedar vs. synthetic: when it makes sense to switch

Some homeowners with aging cedar roofs use replacement as an opportunity to move to a high-quality synthetic — products like Brava or Polysand that replicate the look of cedar shake or slate without the maintenance requirements. It’s worth understanding the difference before you decide.
