Synthetic Cedar Alternatives: What’s New & How They Compare

Brava

Enviroshake

Polysand

Natural cedar is beautiful and timeless, but its upkeep and shorter lifespan can be drawbacks. Today’s synthetic cedar alternatives combine authentic textures with longer warranties, better fire/impact ratings, and sustainable materials. Below, JD Wood Revival compares the latest leading products and when natural cedar may still be your best choice.

Why homeowners choose synthetic cedar

  • Lower routine maintenance — most composites don’t need staining or sealing like wood.

  • Longer manufacturer warranties — many synthetic products come with 30–50-year or lifetime limited warranties.

  • Improved fire & impact performance — many composites achieve Class A fire ratings and UL 2218 Class 4 impact ratings, key in hail-prone areas and for insurance discounts.

  • Sustainability claims — several brands use recycled or recyclable materials, reducing demand for timber while keeping long service life.

Brava Shake (composite)

Engineered from recycled materials, Brava Shake mimics split cedar shakes with deep grain texture. It offers a 50-year limited warranty, Class A fire options, and Class 4 impact resistance — all with low maintenance.

Enviroshake (composite)

A Canadian composite shake with built-in UV stabilizers, lifetime limited warranties (standard & gold levels), and design targeted for cold climates and long-term color stability.

Polysand (composite tiles)

Polysand, based in Ontario, makes composite roofing tiles using its proprietary Polysand™ material. Its SyntheticSlate™ line features ½-inch thick tiles with 9.5″ exposure, weighing about 2.2 lb per tile (~275 lb per square). Tiles are engineered to withstand −60 °C to +80 °C, resist hail, wind, moss, and have built-in UV fade protection. They offer a 50-year warranty and, with approved underlayment, achieve Class A fire rating.

While Polysand’s tiles don’t mimic rustic cedar shakes exactly (they resemble slate/clay tile profiles), they provide an excellent high-performance, low-maintenance alternative for homeowners who want a different but equally premium look.

When natural cedar still makes sense

Despite advances in composites, nothing replicates real cedar’s charm — especially on heritage homes or for those who appreciate its natural aging. Cedar can also be less expensive up front (though maintenance adds cost over time).

Practical buying tips

1. Ask for third-party test reports (UL 2218, ASTM/UL fire rating, wind uplift tests).

2. Compare real samples outdoors — see colors/textures in daylight.

3. Confirm warranty details & transferability — especially for fading, freeze/thaw cycles.

4. Match style to your home — cedar shakes vs. slate/tile profiles.

5. Get a pro installation quote — composites need different fastener patterns; professional installation preserves warranty.
